Mitchelli’s was created by the Mitchell family – Ewan, Liz and their daughters Penny and Georgina. It was originally located amongst the earthy brick walls of the Poplar lanes in the city and first opened its doors in March 2008. Mitchelli’s was a family operation with Georgina in the kitchen, Penny out front, her husband Cristian on coffee, and Ewan and Liz behind the scenes. In 3 years Mitchelli’s met many new friends, hosted birthdays, festivals and the very special wedding of Penny and Cris.
With the earthquake hitting in February 2011, we like many others fought the fate of our building. Although it had held up extremely well the decision was made, beyond our control, to bring the building down and as heart breaking as it was, we were fortunate enough to be able to turn this hard time to a positive one. Penny and Cris were able to start a family, welcoming little Louie Alfonso into the world in December 2011. Georgina married Will and got to spend time with him overseas, first in Canberra then onto Europe.
After looking at several sites, the Cassels emporium in Woolston offered the charm and environment that most resembled that of our beloved Poplar lanes. With a slight change in name, now Mitchelli’s café Rinato (meaning reborn in Italian) we hope to be able to bring a similar look and ambiance to our new premise, having salvaged the stairs, balustrades and awnings from our old site.
We are looking forward to welcoming back all our old customers who became our friends and are excited to meet our new ones.
