POPLAR LANES [HISTORY]

Ash Street and Poplar Street were once part of Christchurch’s main warehouse district dating back to the 1880s. While beforethis, the area was part of a thriving plant nursery run by William 'Cabbage' Wilson who was also very active in early Christchurch political life, becoming the city’s first mayor in 1867.

According to the Christchurch City Council, while the name of Poplar Street has generally remained unchanged, Ash Street
has previously had other botanical names including ‘Beech’ and ‘Elm’.
Now known as Poplar Lanes, these once forgotten lanes are now the home to an eclectic mix of retail, hospitality, residential and commercial activities, including Mitchelli's Deli and Cafe.
